The 38-year-old actor - who is known for his role in Detective Inspector Steve Arnott in the BBC One drama 'Line of Duty' - will be going back to his Scottish roots as part of a new series set in Glasgow and Ayrshire as he stars as Jimmy in the new adaptation of the Andrew O'Hagan novel.

Speaking about the series, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor Gaynor Holmes said: "We’re incredibly proud to continue the BBC’s longstanding commitment to showcasing the very best of Scotland and Scottish talent with this distinctive new drama. Mayflies is an intimate and devastating portrait of male friendship that manages to be both life-affirming and heartbreaking, and we’re delighted to have assembled an outstanding lead cast and creative team to bring it from page to screen."

‘Outlaw King’ actor Tony Curran and ‘Extras’ star Ashely Jensen will also be joining the cast of ‘Mayflies’.

The story will follow Jimmy (Compston) and Tully (Curran) in 1986 who ignite a friendship over their love of arts, but their longstanding friendship, will be put to the test after the pair receive some devastating news.

Screenwriter Andrea Gibb added: "Adapting Andrew O’Hagan’s magnificent novel has been one of the highlights of my career. Andrew tells his story of enduring male friendship with love, truth, tenderness, and searing humanity. There’s not an ounce of sentimentality. It’s very funny and deeply moving. The characters of Tully and Jimmy are instantly recognisable and totally unforgettable. Both are so alive and vibrant that they leap off the page. It’s been a joy and a privilege living with them.”

Filming for the two-part drama will begin in Scotland this Autumn, with an official release date to be announced in due course.
