The first official trailer for upcoming four-part docuseries They Call Me Magic has been unveiled by Apple TV+, delving into the career of the one and only Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

Renowned as one of the most iconic NBA legends of all time, thanks to his journey from being the face of the Los Angeles Lakers to changing the conversation around topics rooted in social justice, Johnson isn't just a sporting icon, but an accomplished activist.

He has changed the conversation around HIV, helped beat down the stigma surrounding the subject and maintained a high profile, all whilst enjoying success as an entrepeneur following his time on the NBA court.

Directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), with editor Dirk Westervelt (Ford v Ferrari) and cinematographer Rachel Morrison (Black Panther), the upcoming TV show will feature unprecedented access to Johnson's life, including never-before-seen interviews with Magic himself, along with his family and, an all-star lineup of recognisable faces such as Cookie Johnson, EJ Johnson, Larry Bird, LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neil and even President Obama.

I've never really kept up with NBA as a sport, but Magic Johnson is a name I have heard thanks to his tireless activism and very public and acceptance of his gay son, EJ Johnson.

With a feminine and androgynous style, EJ is somebody who would likely still find it hard to be accepted in a world like the sporting one, and whilst he seemingly has no interest in embarking in a sporting career of his own, his father is one of the most recognisable sporting giants of all time.

So, to see the pair still on incredible terms and, to see Magic treat his son as any accepting, modern-day parent should, is heartwarming to say the very least. I'll be checking out the docuseries to find out a little more about their relationship, as well as with the hopes of learning more about the man behind the 'Magic' in all other aspects of his life.
