A suspect has been arrested for making death threats against Piers Morgan

The former 'Good Morning Britain' presenter revealed in February last year that he had reported threats - which called him a "marked man" and promised he was "getting killed" - to the Metropolitan Police, and it's now believed a man has been arrested under the Malicious Communications Act.

Piers told The Sun newspaper: "People think it’s perfectly OK to make death threats to public figures on social media but it’s not - there has to be a line drawn, especially when family members are targeted.

"That’s why I reported it and I am grateful to the Met Police and Greater Manchester Police for taking it so seriously."

The male suspect is said to have been released on bail and an imminent decision is expected to be made about whether he will be charged or not.

A source close to the ex-'Life Stories' host told the publication: "This is a point of principle for Piers - he will not tolerate evil threats being sent to his loved ones.

"A troll sent an unbelievably vile and graphic message to both Piers and Spencer, pledging to kill.

"An arrest has finally been made but the lengthy investigation is still ongoing.

"Piers hopes this evil troll ends up in prison where he belongs.

"Hopefully it’ll also act as a deterrent to other online abusers."

Piers told his followers about the threat in February last year when he shared a screenshot of a vile Instagram comment via his Twitter account, adding: "Let’s see how big and tough he feels when I give him the exposure he deserves".

The threat read: "your a marked man, calling the police, big tech or beefing up security isn't going to stop us getting to you, this isn't a threat piers it's a promise, your getting killed. (sic)"

What's more, the troll also threatened his son Spencer Morgan and Piers' ex, Spencer's mum Marion Shalloe.

Another comment read: "Watch your back @spencermorgan if you don't get your dad, your getting it or your mum is (sic)"

Afterwards, Piers admitted his house was "like Fort Knox" after he was sent death threats, and he was determined to track down the troll responsible and hold them "accountable".

He said: "I called the police and they were brilliant. They came round and spent a few hours going over all this.

"I said, 'I have no idea who this person is, but I want to go through the process of trying to find out who it is and hold them accountable to issuing a death threat.'

"I know one of the top executives at Facebook, who own Instagram, and they contacted me and agreed to speak to the police. They've

been helping the police."
