The 57-year-old actor, who plays the titular role of Dr. Martin Ellingham in the ITV series, has been left touched by the number of people who have reached out to share how much the medical comedy-drama means to them.

He said: "We get these lovely letters every day, saying how much they like it and what they were doing when they were watching it.

"There are a number of people going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy and said: 'This is what got me through.'"

'Doc Martin' is set in the fictional Cornish fishing village of Portwenn - which is called Port Isaac in real life - and Martin has loved every minute spent filming in the dreamy location.

He added to the Daily Star newspaper: "I don't know how many hours I've seen looking out across that village, but I am very happy."

The 'Manhunt' star recently insisted he is nothing like his character in the popular series.

The British star revealed that some people are kidded into thinking he's posh, like his character, because of his accent and the roles he's played during his career.

Asked whether he considers himself to be posh or bossy, Martin - who first starred in 'Doc Martin' in 2004 - said: "Only people from up North think I'm posh because I'm from the South. And sometimes I play posh people. But I'm not posh at all. Nor am I bossy. I'm nothing like Doc Martin."

And queried on why the show has been so successful, he added: "We all like the idea of a bossy posh man fixing everything for us. We despise posh men and so if he bangs his head on the door, then we're happy."
