The ‘Vigil’ star is so "proud” to be one of the main stars in Jed Mercurio's BBC police drama and will have no hesitation in returning in his role Detective Inspector Steve Arnott for a seventh series.

The 39-year-old actor told the ‘Celtic View’ podcast: “I’ve got lovely management in America who tell me every year, ‘This has to be your last one’. But I’m really proud of the show, and if that’s the best that I’ll ever do, then so be it.”

This comes after his co-stars Vicky McClure, 40, and 64-year-old Adrian Dunbar - who play Detective Inspector Kate Fleming and Superintendent Ted Hastings, respectively - revealed they were also keen for another run, however, the “biggest hurdle” at the moment is their schedules aligning for filming.

A source told The Sun newspaper’s TV Biz column: “The biggest hurdle facing the Beeb was getting all three leading stars together as their diaries are so busy.

“They were pinning their hopes on Martin having wrapped filming on the second series of Prime Video’s thriller, ‘The Rig’, by the autumn.

"But that’s around the same time Adrian will start work on ‘Ridley’.

“The hope is that, because the second series is only four parts long, it won’t prove a major obstacle.”

Martin recently has been kept busy with his return to ‘Soccer Aid’ - a charity that benefits children living in poverty all over the world - a cause he believes in because of a “terrifying” prospect of his own son with his wife Tianna living in a vulnerable environment.

He said: "My wee boy’s four this year, and for a while after this trip I was having this recurring, terrifying dream of him in that situation.

"One of the boys we met was dropped at that train station when he was five. Your head starts going: ‘what if my boy was just wandering about that station and people could pick him up and do whatever, beat him, something even worse?'"
