The Bros singer, 54, made the tribute on Saturday’s episode (08.10.22) despite being trolled online by viewers for sharing a “sob story” ahead of the dance to “increase his popularity”.

Matt faced the backlash after he spoke to host Rylan Clark on Strictly’s ‘It Takes Two’ sister show on Friday (07.10.22) about the emotional significance of his choice ahead of Saturday’s episode.

He said he and his dance partner Nadiya Bychkova would be performing a Viennese waltz to a song from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ for the show’s ‘Movie Week’ theme.

Matt added: “My granddad was a gunner in the Second World War, so for me I've just connected to my granddad and the love of his life my nanna Winn, and before he died he said I’m gonna to go see Winn.

"So I’m just gonna channel that love affair that connected to me, between my granddad and my nana, and it's already proving to me because of the choreography... it’s an emotional dance, and I feel very connected to it already. I’m gonna do it for my gramps.”

Matt and Nadiya’s Viennese Waltz to ‘Hold My Hand’ on Saturday night’s show (08.10.22) landed them 21 out of 40 points – compared to their 22 points on last week’s instalment of the BBC One show.

Judge Anton Du Beke hailed Matt’s “huge improvement” from the previous week but said the dance was “a bit loose in the frame”.

Far ahead of Matt was Tyler West and Dianne Buswell, who topped the leaderboard by scoring 38 out of 40 with their Charleston to ‘Flash, Bang, Wallop!’ from ‘Half a Sixpence’.

The third live show of the series on Saturday also saw Tony Adams, 55, strip to his underwear in a routine with Kataya Jones to ‘You Sexy Thing’ from ‘The Full Monty’.

Judge Shirley Ballas said she thought Tony displayed “a good pelvic roll”, but the pair landed bottom of the leaderboard with 18 out of 40.

Molly Rainford and Carlos Gu performed a Waltz to ‘One Hand, One Heart’ from West Side Story, with the pair awarded 34 out of 40.

Richie Anderson and Giovanni Pernice, second on the leaderboard last week, danced the Samba in animal costumes to ‘Hakuna Matata’ from ‘The Lion King’, gaining 27 out of 40.

Kym Marsh and her partner Graziano Di Prima chose a Charleston to ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’ from ‘Sweet Charity’ and got 33, while Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystal got 25 for dancing the Rumba to the ‘Jurassic Park’ theme.

Ellie Taylor and Johannes Radebe were awarded 21 points for their Cha Cha Cha to ‘The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss)’ from ‘Mermaids’, with Fleur East and Vito Coppola on 29 after they danced the American Smooth to ‘Part of Your World’ from ‘The Little Mermaid’.

James Bye and Amy Dowden put on alien fancy dress for a Cha Cha Cha to ‘Hooked On A Feeling’ from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, getting them 22, with Ellie Simmonds and Nikita Kuzmin on 27 after their Quickstep to ‘Peppy and George’ from ‘The Artist’.

Will Mellor and Nancy Xu chose an American Smooth to ‘Cry To Me’ from ‘Dirty Dancing’ and were awarded 33, while Helen Skelton and Gorka Márquez did a Viennese Waltz to ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ from ‘Grease’.

Closing this week’s show was Jayde Adams and Karen Hauer who danced the Cha Cha Cha to ‘What a Feeling’ from ‘Flashdance’, and got 29 out of 40 ahead of Sunday’s (09.10.22) results show, which will see another couple voted off.
