The ‘Great British Bake Off’ host was eligible through his grandmother - who escaped Berlin in 1938 - to be a citizen of Germany, which he has now achieved following a six-month process.

The ‘Little Britain’ co-creator shared his news on Twitter, writing: “My grandmother fled Berlin in 1938. Having been offered citizenship, I have just been to the Germany embassy in London to collect my Certificate of Naturalisation. I am officially Anglo-German.

“They gave me a Gummibarchen [gummy bear] and this lovely badge.”

Matt also confirmed he is eligible for a German passport.

He then teased his interest in German football's top flight, Bundesliga, by saying he would be choosing to support a football team from the country, to go alongside his favourite Premier League team, Arsenal.

A team from his grandmother’s hometown and the nation’s capital, FC Union Berlin, were the the first to put themselves forward, replying “willkommen” to the tweet.

And he took the offer up, writing: “I have been claimed by Union Berlin, it seems. My new German team.”

Matt recently came under fire alongside his 'Bake Off' co-host Noel Fielding for their impersonation of electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk during the show's German Week.

But the ‘Shooting Stars’ comic shot back at critics on social media, tweeting: “I am Anglo-German. I am a citizen of both countries, with passports for each, so I’ll do a ropey German accent any time I like. Mind you, I’ll probably also do a French accent and an Italian one, if I fancy. Cause, acting, innit. (sic)”
