Matt Smith will miss 'Doctor Who' and stated he's had the "best four years" on the show.

The actor is preparing to bow out from his role as the titular Time Lord in the BBC One show after the Christmas special, and will miss featuring on the TV series which helped make him a household name after he took to the screens in January 2009 to replace David Tennant.

He told Nuts magazine: "You know, I figured its been four years - the best four years - and its been wonderful, but I think when you've got to go you've got to go. It's sad and I'm going to miss it. It wasn't an easy decision to come to."

Matt is "excited" about the future despite being unsure of what he's going to do next and is keen to begin auditioning for other characters.

He explained: "I'm excited. I go back to auditioning and trying to get a job. Employ me! I just hope to keep doing good work. I'd like to do a play, I'd like to live in the States for a bit."
