The Spice Girls star has joined the outrageous ITV panel show - hosted by Leigh Francis' comic creation - as a new team captain opposite Holly Willoughby, and she thought her friend was joking when she first got the job offer.

She said: "When I first got offered it I thought Keith was playing a prank on me because I've known him for so long.

"Then I actually got the contract through and I was like 'Of course, I would love to do that show!'

"It was a no brainer for me. I love the show, I've known Keith for a long time and he's from Leeds [too] so it's like I'm with my mum, it's great."

And although she's appearing in a new role, Mel already has a pretty good idea about what it takes to impress viewers and the crew.

She said: "When you just let yourself go a little bit. I mean that in the nicest way, as in when you don't have them saying 'I'm not going to say that, I'm not going to do this, I'm only going to be standing here, I'm only going to be looking there.'

"As soon as you get rid of all of your inhibitions, within reason and respectfully, then you are the perfect contestant - the perfect team player."

The new series kicks off tonight (10.10.19) with guests James Blunt, Mark Wright, Katherine Ryan, and Richard Arnold, and Mel revealed she and Holly are already doing their best to keep host Keith "on his toes".

She added: "I think between the two ladies, me and Holly, we're going to do that. We just go with the flow, we do whatever we want and say whatever we want.

"So he has no idea what is going to come out of our mouths, or how we're going to react, or what we're going to do. I think that justifies him being on his toes constantly."

'Celebrity Juice' airs Thursday at 10pm on ITV2.
