The 67-year-old star was forced to quit the ice skating programme earlier this week after breaking his wrist in rehearsals, but admits he put pen to paper to join the programme because he could've been "killed" on some of the other reality TV shows he was offered.

He told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre TV column: "One offer was to walk from Istanbul to Venice, about 2,000 miles, with a pack on.

"Another was to be dropped on an island for a month and have to survive off the land.

"I thought, 'I'll take 'Dancing on Ice' because I won't get killed.' "

Michael took to Instagram this week to reveal he had been forced to quit 'Dancing On Ice' after breaking his wrist.

He wrote: "Took a nasty fall on the ice last Friday during rehearsals and sadly broke my left wrist. Absolutely devastated to hear that I can't go on back on the ice for a while.

"Really enjoyed every single moment of being part of the terrific show and working with all the incredibly talented people involved x (sic)"

Former 'Blue Peter' presenter Radzi Chinyanganya has taken Michael's place on the programme.

He said: "I am thrilled and privileged to be part of the Dancing On Ice 2020 cast.

"I am absolutely gutted for Michael, who is one of my all-time favourite TV presenters, and I wish him a speedy recovery.

"I've only got two weeks to get ready to ice skate in front of the nation so I'm looking forward to a Christmas and New Year filled with training on the ice."
