The former politician - who was previously leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) - laughed off the jeers he received as he made his way to the stage to accept the coveted accolade at London's Grosvenor House hotel.

Nigel - who beat off competition from the likes of Piers Morgan, Eamonn Holmes and Susanna Reid - said of the publicly-voted accolade: "The approval of your audience is the ultimate accolade.

“GB News set out to be the People’s Channel and I’m incredibly proud of that. The establishment media doesn’t always like it – we’re not for them – but this award shows that the people do...

"I am really rather proud to have this because I'm a new boy - I have only been doing this for a couple of years.

"So a huge thank to all those good, ordinary folk who live outside the M25 for voting for me."

For the first time, winners in 17 categories this year were chosen entirely by the public, with over 130,000 people getting involved with the vote.

While Piers missed out on the News Presenter of the Year honour, the TalkTV personality didn't go home empty handed because he bagged the Interview of the Year accolade for his sit-down chat with footballing legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

He was presented with the award by his broadcasting rival Dan Stevens, and couldn't resist the opportunity to say "F*** you" to the Channel 5 presenter .

Accepting his award, Piers said on stage: "Thank you, I can almost feel the warmth in the room.

"I know what you are all thinking, long overdue, but obviously, my initial pain at realising that this was going to be presented to me by Dan Walker was soon overtaken by the reality of the enormous pain that he would be suffering in having to present it to me so thank you, Dan.

"Although what you know about interviewing is beyond me - it was a joke, it was a joke."

Dan then took the microphone and jokingly punched his rival as he said: "Hang on, I think this is what I have to do now."

Piers replied: "He laughs but the day that I did that walkout was the day that 'Good Morning Britain' finally beat the BBC in the ratings in the morning.

"And because I then got invited to leave that evening they never overtook me again so f*** you, Walker."
