Paul Hollywood says 'Food Glorious Food' failed because fans of 'The Great British Bake Off' are so loyal.
The 47-year-old star, who is a judge on the BBC2 competition, noted while the shows had some crossover the actual focus made for a "big difference" with Simon Cowell's attempt.
He told The Sun newspaper: "It's tricky when you have an original programme that people have fallen for then you try to do something similar.
"But 'Food Glorious Food' was cooking not baking. That's the big difference.
"When you bake, people might have those ingredients in their cupboards -- yes, they might be four years old and have weevils in. Yes they might have baking powder that's been sitting there for ten years but they will try it."
The 47-year-old star added 'The Great British Bake Off' has managed to bring in a wider audience with "butch blokes" breaking down stereotypes of men sticking to "bread and women [making] cakes".
He said: "The men are getting better and I think we've quashed that whole thing that men do bread and women do cakes.
"I get tweets from international rugby players with fairy cakes, huge butch blokes come up to me saying, 'You should see my Victoria sandwich'."
