The 'Great British Bake Off' judge described one of the contestant's sugary offerings as looking like "diabetes on a plate" on last night's (22.10.19) semi-final, which some sufferers of the condition took offence to.

Following a backlash, Paul took to Instagram to say sorry.

He posted a picture of Chelsea buns, and wrote: "A sweet treat, Chelsea buns ... a remark re:- diabetes I made on tonight's show was thoughtless and I meant no harm, as both my grandad and my own mother suffer/ suffered from diabetes ... apologies X. (sic)"

One posted: "Thank you for apologizing! Unless you live with diabetes you won't realize why it was offensive especially for type 1 diabetics. I understand why some people don't feel he should have apologized but maybe this will raise more awareness on why these jokes aren't funny. I do love the show and watch from CA (sic)"

Another shared: "Nice of you to apologise my daughter is t1 diabetic she is 8 years old hearing things like that is damaging to them at a young age older t1s might shrug it of because they know it's not food related but uneducated morans like some of the comments ain't so all the absolute muppets saying no need to apologise and were snow flakes trust me iam no snow flake ! Read up on diabetes theres more than 1 type !!!!!! (sic)"

But some viewers shot to Paul's defence.

One wrote: "No apology necessary Paul - some people just don't have a sense of humour (sic)"

Another shared: "Paul my husband has type 1 diabetes. It runs in his family. We live in the USA where everything is not from scratch but preservatives and massive sugar of all kinds. We would never take offense to this. One reason is because it up to the individual to be educated and informed. Moderation, is the best friend!!! We love you in Texas!! Thank you for Bakes and humor!! (sic)"
