The ‘Great British Bake Off’ judge has revealed he’s been slimming down in recent months after he began watching what he eats, and said switching to a diet that includes freshly baked bread has helped him shed the pounds as he can “control what goes into” his food by making it himself.

He said: “I’ve actually lost a stone. In fact, just over. I am working out a little bit – doing a bit of walking and running and tinkering ... just watching what I’m eating really. Every morning I have a couple of eggs from the farm down the road and I make my own toast.

“So, it’s chucky eggs and soldiers and then in the evening I may have another slice of bread with tomato soup.”

Paul, 55, also said cutting out alcohol from his diet has had a huge impact on his overall health.

He added: “I’m on about 1,100 calories a day. I drink about two litres of water as well. I haven’t had alcohol for about four months.”

Fellow ‘GBBO’ judge Prue Leith commended his efforts, and said that whilst she would love to shed the same weight Paul has, it never works for her.

She quipped: “I always want to lose a stone. In fact, I don’t know a woman who doesn’t want to lose a stone, but I never manage it.”

The pair are set to judge celebrity baking talents next week when ‘The Great Celebrity Bake Off’ for Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer fundraising event begins.

Paul and Prue will be joined by a host of famous faces, and episode one of the series features ‘Star Wars’ actress Daisy Ridley, comedians Rob Beckett and Tom Allen and singer Alexandra Burke.

And Paul was especially excited about meeting Daisy.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, he said: “I was excited to have Daisy in the tent, being a big ‘Star Wars’ fan. She taught me how to use a lightsaber. Not with a lightsaber, with a rolling pin!”
