Horror series Penny Dreadful will return for a third season next year it's been confirmed, shooting on location in Dublin for nine episodes to air in 2016.

Sky Atlantic and Showtime's critically acclaimed series from John Logan has managed to secure great ratings which the broadcasters will be hoping continues into its third outing.

Zai Bennett, Sky Atlantic director said of the show: "Penny Dreadful is the perfect fit for Sky Atlantic; truly international in scale and ambition but with a raft of British talent at its core, and filmed in the Republic of Ireland.

"I'm thrilled to have the series returning to the channel, and to once again be partnering with John Logan and continuing to work with our good friends at Showtime."

David Nevins, Showtime President added: "John Logan's brilliant writing and this amazingly talented ensemble continue to draw a passionate, global fan base into the meticulously crafted world of Penny Dreadful.

Launching in 2014, the series has so far drawn on a number of characters from 19th century British and Irish fiction, such as Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray.

Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadaway and Danny Sapani join forces in the show, also starring Rory Kinnear, Helen McCrory, Reeve Carney and Billie Piper.
