"When evil spreads, dread comes for us all." That's how the new season of Penny Dreadful is being pegged ahead of its debut in May on Showtime and, it looks as if chaos is ready to ensue once more.

Following the extreme events of the season two finale last July, Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) finally managed to escape the grasps of the witches coven after her, resisting the temptations of the demon but, it looks like, now spending her time between white padded walls instead of in the arms of Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett).

The 'American Werewolf in London' has instead turned himself over to the authorities after a spate of murders he's committed whenever there was a full moon, meaning Vanessa has been left without her allies, as Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) has left for Africa to lay close friend Sembene (Danny Sapani) to rest.

Also seen in the trailer are Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Lily Frankenstein (Billie Piper), who have discovered a passion for killing mere mortals. They are after all a "master race", or so they think and so, have recruited youngster Justine (Jessica Barden).

Patti LuPone returns this season after playing the Cut-Wife in season two, but she'll be taking on a completely different role as Dr. Seward who has a treatment plan for Vanessa.

Classic horror fans will be able to whet their appetites with the addition of Dr. Henry Jekyll (Shazad Latif) to the cast, whilst Wes Studi also joins the cast as Sir Malcolm's new ally Kaetenay, who has some sort of connection to Ethan.

Penny Dreadful's third season premieres on May 1 at 10/9c on Showtime in the US, and will likely come to the UK on Sky Atlantic shortly thereafter.
