The television presenter stepped down from the ITV show following a backlash to his comments regarding Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, but insisted having the puppet character take his place wouldn't be "such a mad idea".

Sharing a Sunday Sport article, which suggested the famous 80s TV character could sit alongside Susanna Reid on the ITV breakfast show, he wrote: "Not such a mad idea ... Roland was a massive breakfast TV ratings success in the ‘80s & likes to speak his mind. He’d also be immune to the cancel culture mob because he could cry ‘ANIMAL CRUELTY!’ if any of the wokies came for him ... (sic)"

And Piers also took to Twitter to thank his fans for the support in the wake of his exit, after his book 'Wake Up' returned to the Sunday Times best-seller chart this week.

He wrote: "Great to see Wake Up back in the Sunday Times best-seller chart for the first time in 10 weeks & at its highest ever position (5). I continue to be staggered by all the support I’m getting. Thank you! (And to all those still gleefully celebrating my ‘demise’, mwah) (sic)"

Piers quit 'Good Morning Britain' after suggesting he "didn’t believe a word" of what the Duchess of Sussex had said in her interview. During the chat, she recalled how she "didn’t want to be alive" after receiving so much public scrutiny.

The incident has since become TV regulator Ofcom's most complained about moment of all time  - with more than 57,000 complaints - although Piers defended his views on the matter, and he claims Meghan is "contemptible" for the "damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen".

He said at the time: "I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that's entirely their right. I don't believe almost anything that's come out of her mouth. And I think the damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.

"If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly-held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it."
