Piers Morgan says he was "half-sedated" when he posted the picture of himself in hospital on Twitter last week and had forgotten he had shared the image with his 6.52 million followers.

The 53-year-old television presenter claimed on 'Good Morning Britain' on Monday morning (14.01.19) he was still anaesthetised when he uploaded a photo of himself in a hospital bed with breathing tubes up his nose last Friday (11.01.19) and was unaware of what he was doing following thousands of messages from concerned fans.

He said: "I have this thing bothering me - stomach-related - so eventually I went and had all these tests done and one of them is when they stuff this big tube down your throat...

"They give you the choice, 'Do you want to just have a bit of spray and go for it with this thing jammed down our throat ... or do you want the sedative?'

"I said, 'What would you all do?' and the doctors and nurses said you've got to have the sedative, 20 per cent go without it and they gag and puke and all that and it's horrible. I had the sedative and you're supposed to stay awake while it's happening you're kind of aware but the next thing I know I woke up in recovery.

"It's all over, done, didn't remember a thing. I had my phone on me and basically in that picture I'm still half-sedated but my phone was near me and they all left the room to leave me to it. I got the phone and I had no idea I'd done this..."

He further explained that after resting at home, he awoke to find that there had been a huge response over the hospital photo, which he was oblivious to have posted.

He said: "I wake up and there's like a thousand messages saying, 'What's happened? Are you alive? What's going on? And I thought, 'What have I done?' "
