Rhys Ifans

Rhys Ifans is to star as the brother of Sherlock Homes in US TV series 'Elementary'.

The 'Amazing Spider-Man' actor will play Mycroft Holmes - the intelligent sibling of the fictional detective - and he will make his debut in a London-based storyline of the popular series, which is set in New York, next month.

CBS has released a statement confirming the news, and 'Elementary' executive producer-and-creator Robert Doherty said: "I could not be more excited to have Rhys come on board. I have always been a tremendous fan and feel very honoured to have him in the fold."

A source revealed: "Rhys is really looking forward to filming. It's not often you play someone smarter than Sherlock Holmes."

Rhys will join Sherlock actor Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Lui, who stars as a female version of Dr. Watson, and it seems the cast are very excited about his imminent arrival.

Doherty added: "Equally excited are John and Lucy both of whom have worked with Rhys in feature films. I think this is going to be a lot of fun for all of us."

According to Deadline, the first episode starring Rhys will see Sherlock revisit Baker Street in London to solve an old case. While there he is forced to face his brother after suffering a fall out and the pair confront their complicated history and relationship.
