The 58-year-old star - who also created the likes of 'The Office' and 'Extras' - doesn't want to run his hit Netflix comedy-drama into the ground, and he wants to bring things to an end with a third and final season.

As quoted by The Sun newspaper's Bizarre TV column, he said: "I've already made my mind up, there just won't be a fourth.

"You never say never but you put those things out there to make you remember because it's tempting, it's very tempting.

"Studios are tempting, the audience are tempting. But there is a lovely old saying that to lead the orchestra you have got to turn your back on the audience, and I think that's true.

"The audience think they want another one but they don't know, they're not sure, so you've got to be careful."

His comments follow reports Ricky is in talks with Netflix about making a Christmas special following a successful second series.

An insider previously said: "Ricky is a huge asset to Netflix as everything he writes essentially turns to gold.

"There is such a huge appetite for After Life and it's got a massive fan base.

"The third series won't air until 2021 so there is a meeting in the diary to see if Ricky could create the Christmas special."

Last month, Ricky revealed Netflix had asked him to make a third series after the second season was well received.

He tweeted: "Because so many of you watched #AfterLife2 so quickly and made it Number 1 again, the nice people at @Netflix have suggested that I get off my fat a**e and do another season. This is all your fault. (sic)"
