EastEnders' Rose Ayling-Ellis has told how Danny Dyer's "deaf awareness is top notch", and he has even been walking backwards around the set to help her out.

The 43-year-old actor had a reputation for portraying hardmen before he took on the part of Mick Carter, and now off screen he has been helping out Rose, who is deaf, by changing the way he walks around Walford so she can lip-read him.

Rose - who plays Mick's daughter Frankie Lewis, the soap’s first ever deaf character - said: "Danny made me feel at ease right from the start.

"His deaf awareness is top notch, and he even walks backwards with me to set, just so I can see his face, which says a lot about him.

"We get on really well and I'm always excited to share scenes with him."

Rose admitted she was nervous about meeting Danny for the first time, and couldn't believe it when she found out Frankie would turn out to be Mick's long-lost daughter.

She told Inside Soap magazine: "Having him as my screen dad is amazing! I couldn't believe it when I was told.

"I was so nervous about meeting him, and was worried if I would be able to lip-read him."

Mick has had a tough time of it in recent months as he has been trying to come to terms with non-recent sexual abuse he experienced as a child.

The plot has looked at the former Queen Vic landlord's ongoing struggle with abandonment and understanding that what he experienced while he was in care was abuse, when his care worker Katy Lewis - played by Simone Lahbib - preyed on him when he was just 12 years old.

And recently, he discovered Frankie was his daughter as a result.

Danny - who became a granddad earlier this month when his daughter Dani Dyer gave birth to son Santiago - recently admitted the hard-hitting plot is the "greatest gift" he has had on the BBC One soap.

He previously said: "I've got to say there’s not much I can say at the moment about it because we've started a new series and my storyline is about to kick off. I'm very excited about it.

"And you know, it's probably the greatest gift I've been given since being in 'EastEnders' and I really hope I do it justice."
