We've all seen the naked pictures of Tom Hardy running through fields donning warpaint and very little else, and now the first official trailer for the FX series he was filming during that time, Taboo, has been released.

Set in 1814, Taboo follows the journey of James Keziah Delaney, "a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocable changed."

Though his friends and family thought him long dead, when he returns home to London from the wilds of Africa to inherit what's left of his father's shipping empire, he makes it a priority to rebuild a life for himself.

Despite that, his father's legacy is somewhat of a "poisoned chalice", and so with adversaries in all corners of the city, James must navigate "increasingly complex territories" or pay the ultimate price - his life.

"Encircled by conspiracy, murder, and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery," reads the show's synopsis.

The eight-part drama series is executive produced by Hardy alongside Ridley Scott and show creator Steven Knight. It's based on a story Hardy co-wrote with his father Chip Hardy, who'll be serving as the show's consulting producer.

It's anticipated to come to FX in the US and BBC One in the UK towards the end of 2016 in the US and the UK in 2017.
