Sheridan Smith will star as Jo Gillespie in brand new three-part drama Black Work, written by Matt Charman and produced by Mammoth Screen.

When her husband Ryan - an undercover policeman - is shot dead in mysterious circumstances, Jo sets out on a mission to discover just who it was that brought his life to an end.

Discovering the murderer won't be easy for Jo though, and she'll be forced to confront difficult truths about her marriage and family life if she's to get anywhere.

Emotionally distraught and heavily conflicted, Jo is also a mother to 7-year-old Melly and her stepson Hal, grieving and wracked with guilt as an attachment to Ryan's colleague and fellow police officer Jack Clark puts further strain on her family.

Writer Matt Charman said: “Sheridan Smith is a dream to write for because as an actress there’s really nothing she can’t do. And Black Work is a story that pushes her to the limit – it makes her character, Jo Gillespie doubt herself, her family, her friends, everything she’s always taken for granted in her search for her husband's killer.”

Filming for the drama is to commence this autumn in Leeds, with more casting news to follow in forthcoming weeks and months.
