The music mogul suffered a devastating back injury earlier this year after an accident on an electric bike, but he is reportedly keen to return to his television roles in the new year, after being replaced on the recent series by Diversity's Ashley Banjo.

A source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "Simon was gutted at having to sit out the show this year. But he’s been totally focused on getting better and will definitely be back on the panel. He’s come on in leaps and bounds recently, thanks to letting his body heal, a healthy diet and some California sun. He’s also enjoyed being surrounded by his family. But he loves his job and is raring to go, especially as BGT offers so much joy and light entertainment in dark times. The panel are all really excited to have him back, though they thought Ashley did a great job and he’ll definitely perform on the show again next year with Diversity."

Simon missed out on the rest of the 'Britain's Got Talent' shows last month, but he had originally hoped to return to the UK to star in the show's Christmas special, with Ashley expected to fill his shoes.

A source previously said: "Simon hoped he'd be well enough to fly from Los Angeles to the UK for the special show but he's had to pull out. Plus the new lockdown measures - and him having to fly two weeks before the show so he could quarantine in advance - made it even more difficult for him to make the journey. Simon will of course be across the show and what happens on it but this is a massive blow for him."

However, the process he is making is ahead of schedule in his recovery after undergoing back surgery.

A source said last month: "He's doing really well and is recovering well and ahead of what was expected. He's doing over 10,000 steps a day as well as swimming to get his back strong and healed again. He no longer needs to wear a back brace all the time."
