Russell T Davies' It's A Sin has been named the top TV show of 2021

The Channel 4 drama - which followed a group of friends in 1980s London whose lives are devastated by the fast-developing HIV/AIDS crisis - was voted the best show of 2021, beating off competition from the likes of Netflix duo 'Sex Education' and 'Squid Game', which finished second and third respectively.

Russell T. Davies, writer and creator of 'It's A Sin' - which starred Olly Alexander, Lydia West, Omari Douglas, Nathaniel Curtis, Callum Scott Howells and Keeley Hawes - said: "Thank you so much, what a lovely end to the year. That's hugely appreciated.

"And really, all praise to that cast, the nicest bunch of people portraying such tough stories with so much imagination and commitment.

"As ever, my thanks go out to those doing the hard work in the field of HIV and AIDS, the activists and the allies, all fighting to this day for a better future."

Completing the top five are Sky Atlantic pair 'Mare of Easttown' - which sees Kate Winslet portray the titular police officer - and 'Succession'.

Other shows which made the top 10 included BBC heavyweights 'Vigil' and 'Line of Duty', which were seventh and eighth, and Disney+ shows 'WandaVision was in sixth and 'Loki' in 10th, while Netflix's 'Lupin' was voted into ninth.

What's more, BBC One jail drama 'Time' - which featured Sean Bean as an inmate and Stephen Graham as a prison officer - narrowly missed out on the top 10, finishing in 11th.

Apple TV+ show 'Ted Lasso' was in 18th, while ITV2 dating show 'Love Island made the top 25 in 24th place, among others.
