Sky are preparing to launch a new high-tech smart television that will offer the potential to revolutionise the way they beam content into our homes.

The Sky Glass television will be launched in the UK imminently and is set to land in Ireland and Sky’s other European markets from 2022, ending the need to have a dish on the side of your house and a set-top box to access the broadcaster's range of entertainment and sports programming.

With all the technology required to access Sky channels built into the new TV, the broadcaster is making a move towards a full streaming service, with the big move announced at a glossy launch event in London on Thursday (October 7th, 2021) morning.

Sky dishes have been a part of the company's identity since they launched in 1989, but all that is about to change after they partnered with Map Project Office, one of world’s leading design agencies, to create the new televisions.

Sky Glass TVs will come in a choice of three sizes (Small 43”, Medium 55” and Large 65”) and five colours, with Ocean blue, Ceramic white, Racing green, Dusky pink, or Anthracite black, all on offer and with matching remotes and customisable speaker fascias for extra personalisation.

It will have a mounting bracket cleverly integrated into the TV, or a sleek colour-matched stand, with clutter and wires now a thing of the past as all the technology required to watch Sky TV will be packed in the new smart TV.

With voice and Glance Motion Technology, you will just need to say “Hello Sky” or walk past to bring the streaming TV to life.

Sky Glass will also be the world’s first TV to be certified CarbonNeutral, with customers set to use 50% less electric, as all the technology required will be packed into one source.

The success of Netflix and Amazon's streaming services have pointed the way to the future of TV and now Sky have jumped a step ahead of their rivals with a new product that has flashes of Apple's enduring successful iPhone.

Customers will be able to buy Sky Glass TVs in a format similar to a mobile phone contract, with flexible payment options that can be spread across the length of your contract, with the lowest price package for the 43" Sky Glass TV set to be launched at £39-a-month (€45) in the UK.

The TV also claims to take out the need for a soundbar, with six powerful, integrated speakers in optimal positions to deliver edge-to-edge Dolby Atmos sound.

Speaking at the launch, Dana Strong, Group Chief Executive, Sky claimed the new product will 'redefine the TV market'.

"Sky Glass is the streaming TV with Sky inside, providing the total integration of hardware, software and content," said Strong.

"Built on over 30 years of understanding what our customers want, this is a TV that only Sky could make. We believe this is the smartest TV in the world, and that customers will love it.”

While customers currently using the Sky Q box will still be able to receive the service using their current equipment, this is a bold move by Sky to move in a whole new direction.
