The 56-year-old former air steward and the 60-year-old sampling assistant were given the boot from the Channel 4 show in the programme's first-ever double elimination after they failed to impress during Spice Week.

Terry - who missed last week's episode through illness, resulting in nobody leaving - said afterwards: "If I had gone on week one I would have felt happy to have run the race as far as I did. At week five I knew it was the end of it for me, but not in any way shape or form was I bothered about the result on the day.

"I think it was a fair result of the judges, as it has been throughout the series. It wasn't the baking result I wanted but that is what it was. It's all been about how this has been a massive change in my life, it has brought me away from a place that I was in."

Before the final verdict was revealed, Karen had a feeling she might be getting the chop from the show, and later admitted she made a "lot of silly mistakes".

She added: "But I kept smiling through them, when you are in that kind of situation you just keep going. I thought if I kept pouring brandy in the ginger cake, I would make it work, but it had the opposite effect and became a brandy cake."

The bakers were tasked with making a signature ginger cake, shortbread pastries Ma'amoul for the technical part of Spice Week, and a spiced biscuit chandelier as their showstopper.

Mental health specialist Kim-Joy was named as the week's Star Baker, but judge Paul Hollywood was forced to fly solo during the showstopper challenge after Prue Leith pulled out due to illness.
