Tokyo Vice comes to Starzplay on May 15th, 2022

International streaming service Starzplay from Starz has announced that crime thriller Tokyo Vice is to premiere on the platform on Sunday, May 15th, 2022.

Loosely inspired by the best-selling memoir of the same name, by American journalist Jake Adelstein, the TV series is filmed on location in Tokyo, capturing the journey that the writer went through into the neon-soaked underbelly of the city, in the late 1990s.

Ansel Elgort (West Side Story) will be stepping into the role of Adelstein, and will star alongside the likes of Ken Watanabe (Batman Begins), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Rachel Keller (Fargo), Ella Rumpf (Succession), Hideaki Itô (Umizaru), Tomohisa Yamashita (Code Blue: The Movie) and Shô Kasamatsu (Love You as the World Ends).

Tony Award-winning playwright J. T. Rogers created and wrote the series, serving as executive producer next to Emmy winner Michael Mann, who also directed the pilot. Emmy winners Alan Poul and Emily Gerson Saines are also executive producers, as well as Academy Award winner John Lesher, Brad Kane, Destine Daniel Cretton, Kayo Washio, Adelstein, Elgort and Watanabe.

I'm not familiar with the memoir on which Tokyo Vice is based, but I am excited to check it out after reading about the dark and gritty nature of what it is centred around.

Ansel Elgort is one of this generation's most talented stars, so to see him fronting this new series will be a treat.

Now, we just have to wait for a trailer or handful of first-look clips before we can really get excited about seeing this series make its premiere next month.

Bring it on!

With the first two episodes available at launch for Starzplay subscribers in the UK, Ireland, Austria, Germany and Switzerland (German-speaking), Tokyo Vice premieres on May 15th, 2022 with new episodes airing every Sunday thereafter.
