Dawn French has teased the classic comedy could make a return in the near future after almost a decade off screen as her hilarious alter-ego Reverend Geraldine Granger, which she portrayed for 13 years, is promoted to Bishop.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, she said of the possibility of a spin-off: "You know we now have Church law in the UK that women could be Bishops, so who knows? Watch this space -- she might get a promotion!"

However, the 58-year-old comedian has admitted big changes would need to be made if she were to create a spin-off as the show would never be the same without her late co-star Roger Lloyd-Pack, who played farmer Owen Newitt, following his tragic death two years ago.

She explained: "Our old guys are really old now, so I don't think we could revisit it, because it's just too different. But it could change."

The programme, which was created by Richard Curtis, has won three British Comedy Awards, a National Television Award, and had over 12 million viewers tune into the last episode in 2007.

Dawn said: "It was incredibly popular in the UK -- as it here, which I'm delighted to know. So you kind of get elevated to a status that you're very lucky and privileged to have."
