Yesterday (March 25th, 2022), BritBox released the official trailer for a three-part TV series, starring and directed by Hugh Laurie (Blackadder), which will be an adaptation of one of Agatha Christie’s works.

Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? is a brand new show heading to the streaming platform early next month (April 2022), and has a brilliant cast lined up, such as Will Poulter (Dopesick) and Lucy Boynton (Murder on the Orient Express).

Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? is based on Christie’s novel of the same name from 1934. It begins with a man lying dead at the bottom of a cliff, seemingly the victim of an accidental fall.

However, with his dying breath, he exclaims the mysterious question of the title of the book, and then passes on.

Some, if not the majority of people, may simply shrug at these (rather odd) words, and move on with their daily lives. Bobby Jones (Poulter) is not one of these people, nor is his childhood friend, Lady Frances ‘Frankie’ Derwent (Boynton).

The duo make out to honour the dead man, as they decipher, and then answer his final question. In doing so, they uncover a conspiracy of deceit, betrayal and, perhaps not unsurprisingly, murder.

Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones) joins Poulter and Boynton in the show as Bobby’s friend and mentor, Dr. Thomas, whilst Daniel Ings (I Hate Suzie) is Roger Bassington-ffrench, target of the amateur sleuths’ early suspicions.

Maeve Dermody (The Secret Garden), plays Moira Nicholson, troubled wife of the domineering Dr. James Nicholson, and Jonathan Jules (Small Axe) appears as Ralph ‘Knocker’ Beadon, one time shipmate of Bobby.

Additional cast members include Miles Jupp (The Durrells), who joins as Roger’s elder brother Henry Bassington-ffrench, squire of Merroway Court, the family seat in Hampshire; Amy Nuttall (Downton Abbey) as Sylvia Bassington-ffrench, Henry’s American wife, socially adrift in the English countryside; and Alistair Petrie (Sex Education) as Bobby’s father, Rev. Richard Jones.

Hugh Laurie, as well as directing, stars in the series as Dr. Nicholson, the Clinical Director of the sanatorium near Merroway Court.

Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? will debut exclusively on BritBox on April 14th, 2022.
