Peggy Mitchell stunned fans of EastEnders last night as she returned to the BBC One soap for special scenes with on-screen niece Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack).

Barbara Windsor who plays the Mitchell matriarch left the soap back in 2010, but the actress admits: "Peggy just couldn't resist putting her oar in when it comes to Sharon, who she has never forgiven for breaking up her precious boys Phil and Grant!"

Slamming Sharon and Phil's wedding invitation down on the table in the episode, Peggy screeched: "It's a joke, that's what it is. That trashy little tart isn't going near my boy!"

Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, Barbara explained: "The scenes are typical Peggy and it was great to play her kicking off again and of course working with the lovely Sam Womack as Ronnie.

"I hope it was a nice surprise for the EastEnders fans."

Last seen on the show in September 2013, Peggy paid Phil a visit in the hospital following a nasty car accident.

Though there's no confirmation she'll be back on a permanent basis, the actress said last year about a return: "I don't know about full-time, maybe part-time."
