The Channel 4 soap - which is aimed at teenagers - is famous for its controversial storylines and has featured dozens of gay relationships, but producer Bryan has admitted not all viewers are happy with his choices.

He said: "We get told off all the time for being too gay and having too many gay characters.

"I don't think you can be too gay, quite frankly.

"The idea that people object to two boys kissing is really bizarre to me."

However, the former 'EastEnders' boss has admitted he sometimes goes overboard when it comes to raising awareness.

He told the Daily Star newspaper: "Sometimes it has been like we are hitting the audience over the head with a pamphlet.

"We have to keep that lightness of touch, otherwise it becomes a little too worthy for its own good."

Recent storylines have included Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) - who previously contracted HIV following a one night stand - getting together with student Harry Thompson (Parry Glasspool) following the breakdown of his second marriage to John-Paul McQueen (James Sutton), Lockie Campbell (Nick Rhys) being caught having affairs with wife Porsche's (Twinnie-Lee Moore) cousins Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) and John-Paul, and Grace Black (Tamara Wall) seducing her surrogate's girlfriend Kim Butterfield (Daisy Wood-Davis) in a bid to save herself from being blackmailed by the obsessive nurse.
