With the sad news this week that Supernatural will be coming to an end with its 15th season, we've decided to take a look back at the series to-date and pick out the all-time most powerful villains to have given Sam and Dean a run for their money! Whilst we love the Winchester brothers - and the incredible acting talents from the guys behind them (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) - it's the bad guys and gals that always get us talking!
She provided some of the most entertaining and tense scenes in Supernatural history during her run, and proved to be one of the toughest demons of all time to be taken down. Traditional means wouldn't work against her, and so it took some thinking outside of the box to banish her for good.
This white-eyed demon made her debut in season 3, and caused chaos up to her crazy final scenes in season 4. She was the first demon ever created by Lucifer, but also the final seal that had to be broken to free the Devil from his prison. She's one of the few villains to have achieved their goal and beaten Sam and Dean, so we couldn't make this list without mentioning her!
An angel and the Scribe of God who records his word, Metatron is one of those villains that's actually fought on the same side as Sam and Dean in the past. His end actually came when he tried to take down Amara, aka The Darkness. After failing to harm her, she actually imploded the angel in a shocking scene.
Though he's at his core a baddie, Crowley is actually somebody who the viewers have gotten behind on a number of occasions. His charm and allure is portrayed perfectly by actor Mark Sheppard, and we've actually seen him team up with Sam and Dean in the past. The red-eyed demon was so powerful that no matter how many opponents he went up against, it was actually an act of taking his own life that ended his run on the show.
3. The Darkness
Amara is the sister of God, but jealousy over his creations meant that she would eventually become The Darkness. When she was released by Dean, she did everything in her power to rain chaos down on the universe. Fortunately, those plans failed and she was taken down. That doesn't stop her incredible powers being some of the mightiest we've ever seen on the show, though!
When it comes to angels, Michael is the most powerful. Hoping to bring about the apocalypse by raising Lucifer from Hell, so that the two could battle, he's caused some big trouble for the Winchesters in the past.
The impact that Lucifer has had on Supernatural is unrivalled. He's responsible for the creation of demons and is the actual Devil! His eyes are terrifying and he was the very first super-powerful being we thought may actually be able to take out either Sam or Dean for good at the start of the series. He'll haunt us forever!
Supernatural season 14 is expected to air in the UK this spring/summer on E4. Past seasons are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
