Most women would want to spend the day in bed with David Beckham

40 years ago this month, John Lennon and Yoko Ono caused a media sensation by spending their honeymoon tucked up in bed at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel as a protest against war. Now, in light-hearted commemoration of their historic slumber party, a new survey has found out what the Brits of today would be most inclined to take to their beds in protest about - and which famous folk from past and present they'd most like to share the experience with.

When it comes to choosing which celebs to invite under the covers, nearly half of British men (43%) would protest in bed with Kylie Minogue, whereas David Beckham topped the bed-in poll for the ladies. But as a nation we're also keen to protest whilst lying side by side with political figures or prominent campaigners. American president Barack Obama came in third place overall, and other top favourites include Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill and John Lennon himself.

The survey by the Sleep Council reveals that the current issues that would most prompt people to get into bed and protest are world peace, paying less tax, British jobs for British workers, freedom of speech, animal rights and children's rights. Without a doubt, positive action on any or all of these protest-worthy issues would have got the thumbs-up from the peace-loving chief Beatle.

The survey also looks into an important issue of today. March is National Bed Month. It aims to promote awareness that a good bed is vital to ensure satisfactory sleep and so balance the increasing levels of stress most of us are now experiencing in our daily lives. A quarter of people surveyed said that stress is having a major impact on the amount of 'intimate bed-ins' they share with their partners. Over a fifth say they're less happy in themselves and thus much less inclined to get intimate in bed.

However, eight in ten people say the situation would be improved by the addition of a big, comfortable bed. It might sound like a whim, but in fact it could well be a simple and effective solution to the stress and intimacy issues we currently face. Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council says: "We've always known that a good bed was important to a good night's sleep, but it's obviously number one for nuptials too."
