Quick walkers are at a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes

A new study has revealed that walking at a pace of 3km per hour or more cuts the chances of developing the condition by at least 15 per cent.

Experts studied the medical records of half a million people and found that the faster individuals walked on average, the lower the risk of getting the disease.

The findings, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, revealed that the risk of diabetes fell for every kilometre per hour faster a person walked on average.

Dr. Ahmad Jayedi, lead author of the study from Semnan University of Medical Sciences in Iran, said: "While current strategies to increase total walking time are beneficial, it may also be reasonable to encourage people to walk at faster speeds to further increase the health benefits of walking."
