The culprit, known only by his surname of Wang, threw the coins for "good luck" on his domestic flight in China.

Wang was flying from the Shandong province and hoped to land in Hainan and decided to bless the plane with coins to make sure the flight passed without a hitch.

He wrapped the coins in red paper and threw them towards the engine as no one was looking to "pray for blessings".

Airport staff discovered the money on the ground during the pre-flight inspection. Fortunately, all of the coins were removed from the engine before takeoff but the flight was still cancelled for safety reasons.

It meant that Wang and 147 other passengers had to wait until the next day to make their journey with local media reporting that he was detained by police for his coin throwing.
