Scientists from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) have presented drastic new plans for how the game could be played on the lunar surface that would see shorter matches completed in four 10-minute quarters - with 20-minute breaks between to give players a chance to rest in the unfamiliar environment.

Traditional football kits would be scrapped for spacesuits while hologram referees would patrol pitches and punish fouls with yellow and red cards displayed on a visor.

Futurist Brian David Johnson explained: "With the upcoming 2025 Lunar mission set to make moon colonisation one step closer, it's only a matter of time until we start to think about how we engineer aspects of our lives nowadays, such as hobbies and sports, for the moon in the future."
