Susan Prior was diving off the coast of Norfolk Island, Australia when he spotted the gold ring lodged around the creature's neck.

Prior uploaded images of the fish onto social media and explained that she has to help the animals out after jewellery got stuck over their heads.

She wrote: "Yesterday I saw one of the two mullet that have rings around them. These fish snuffle through the sand to get their food. A ring will flip easily over their heads."

Prior discovered that the wedding ring belonged to someone called Nathan Reeves but she was unable to return it after the fish got away.

She added: "I decided to see if I could find the possible owner. It didn’t take long for my suspicion to be confirmed; we now have a poor mullet weighed down with someone’s (expensive) gold wedding ring."
