A whale sculpture saved a train from crashing.

The locomotive had crashed through a barrier at a metro station in Rotterdam but was saved from plunging into the water below by the handily placed art installation.

The unnamed driver was able to leave the train unaided and was not hurt in the incident, although the train is now precariously placed on the artwork.

The sculpture, titled White Tails, was created by artist Maarten Struijs who expressed surprise that it did not break.

He told Dutch broadcaster NOS: "It has been there for almost 20 years and... you actually expect the plastic to pulverise a bit, but that is apparently not the case.

"I'll make sure that I get a few photos. I could never have imagined it that way."
