Claire Foy felt she had a "duty" to portray Queen Elizabeth as well-rounded in 'The Crown'.

The 32-year-old actress portrays a younger version of the British monarch in the new Netflix series opposite Matt Smith as her husband Prince Philip and she admits it is "tricky" to play a real-life person, but the most important thing to remember is that not everyone is likeable all the time.

She said: "It's really tricky and you just have to take it as any other normal piece and not be scared of making a bold choice or making people unattractive.

"Being really likeable all the time is just not real life, so it's your duty to make a well-rounded character.

"But I've never really thought of it as a biopic because it's not just about her, it's about 'the firm', it's about the crow, it's about politics and everything that's happening in society at the time."

And Claire thinks Philip's story is the "most interesting" part of the whole saga.

She told Britain's Marie Claire magazine: "Philip's story is the most interesting in the royal family.

"His background is the opposite of what you'd think.

"Everyone has this idea that he is this bumbling, deliberately posh sort of man who says the wrong thing.

"I actually think he has no respect for people respecting him, in a way, he just thinks it's all nonsense - why should he be living in a palace and other people not?

"It's heartbreaking where the story goes because you're watching these two people have a relationship in public, but also the decisions they make that affect their marriage."

But Claire thinks it was "easier" for royals in the spotlight back then than it is now.

She said: "It was easier in a sense the rules were clearly defined.

"You knew where you stood. The press was respectful and likewise you gave them a certain about of room.

"But the lines are so blurred now you don't know when you're on and when you're off."
