The Duke of Edinburgh passed away aged 99 last April and after his funeral was scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic, members of the royal family, representatives from the Government, the clergy and other faiths will gather at Westminster Abbey in London on 29 March for a service honouring his life and legacy.

A statement released by Buckingham Palace said: “Members of the Royal Family will attend a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, at Westminster Abbey on Tuesday, 29th March.

“The Service will give thanks for The Duke of Edinburgh’s dedication to family, Nation and Commonwealth and recognise the importance of his legacy in creating opportunities for young people, promoting environmental stewardship and conservation, and supporting the Armed Forces.

“The Service will in particular pay tribute to The Duke of Edinburgh’s contribution to public life and steadfast support for the over 700 charitable organisations with which His Royal Highness was associated throughout his life.”

The palace also confirmed the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which Philip founded in 1956, will feature "prominently" in the service, with a tribute from a gold award holder.

The Band of the Royal Marines will provide music before and after the service, and the Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal Choirs will singe during the service.

Although it wasn't confirmed if Philip's wife, Queen Elizabeth - who has missed a number of public engagements in recent months due to ill health - will be in attendance for the service, a source told MailOnline that she "hopes" to be there."

Foreign royal family members will make the trip to the UK for the service, and there will be more than 500 representatives of Philip's patronages and charities among the guests, as well as representatives from the Armed Forces, the Devolved Administrations, Overseas Territories, and the Queen's Household.

The service will broadcast live on BBC One in the UK.
