Russell Howard may have been on the stand up circuit for the best part of ten years but it’s only in the last couple that he has really shot to prominence.
With the likes of Mock the Week and his radio show on 6 music he had become one the most popular and exciting comics that’s currently doing the rounds.
And Russell is back this week with his latest DVD Dingledodies, from a Brighton date on his recent tour.
He moves around from topic to topic at great pace, and is very much driven by the audience for the opening part of the show. And while he handles topical issues such as politics and so on well it’s the stories from his life that make him so funny.
And Howard isn’t afraid to poke fun at himself and his experiences, whether that is losing his virginity, or just being rather awkward at life he delivers them with such a high level of energy that you can’t help but get swept along.
However if you are a regular viewer of the likes of Mock the Week some of the material is very familiar which is a shame.
His performances are however still a little rough around the edges, sometimes giving the appearance that he isn’t always totally comfortable in the spotlight, which shows that he is still developing his comedy which is nothing but exciting for people who enjoy his work.
It was nice to see him interact with the audience rather than just insult them, which we have seen so often from other stand ups and it does get a little boring after a while, plus his tangents leave you wondering where he is going to go next, but this does actually work in his favour rather than being a negative.
But the energy and excitement of his performances makes him one of the most liked and talented comics around at the moment, and it would be nice for him to be seen as a truly established comedian rather than one of its up and coming stars.
