New research by www.MoneySavingHeroes.co.uk unveils some of the more bizarre conspiracy theories that British people believe; including that 1 in 12 think that aliens had a part in putting together Stonehenge.

Respondents were initially given a list of different conspiracy theories and asked to select all of the theories they believed were true. The top five that emerged as follows:

1.     That aliens are real and their existence is being covered up – 57%

2.     The moon landings never happened – 30%

3.     New World Order (Illuminati) is real – 27%

4.     Global warming is a myth – 19%

5.     The earth is flat – 12%

From this it was also found that 3% of Britons believe the world is ran by shape-shifting, lizard-like aliens.

1 in 3 who thought the moon landings were fake said they felt the most incriminating piece of evidence was the flag appearing to wave in the footage. When pressed further on the moon landings, it was found 2% of Britons believe no one has been to space.

All respondents were next asked whether they believed aliens had a hand in building prehistoric architecture; from this is was found that 32% believe that they helped build the pyramids and 1 in 5 admitted they thought aliens played a part in constructing Stonehenge. When asked if they believed aliens to be responsible for crop circles, 48% of respondents thought this to be true.

Respondents were asked how often they read about conspiracy theories, with the majority revealing they study the topic at ‘least once a week’. When further pressed on consumption of conspiracy theories, it was found that most respondents find their conspiracy theories on Reddit and that 11% find a theory they believe to be true every month.

“Conspiracy theories such as the earth being flat have become mainstream recently, helped by a number of celebrities claiming to be a ‘flat earthers’ including highly controversial YouTuber Logan Paul. Being a flat earther seems like an easy way to get publicity and it is likely another stunt from Logan as he does love the attention.”
