The upcoming next generation console will present a number of challenges as developers have to move from what they know into a new world, but he doesn't think the transition will be as difficult this time round.

Speaking during 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons' talk show 'Animal Talking', he said: "With every generation, it always feels like we master the generation, right, then it's like 'oh, there's a new one coming up'.

"And you're like 'but I just finally got this one'... But I think this is going to be a little bit different.

"It feels like we've got a really good foundation of understanding, so transitioning between generations is going to be a little bit less of a massive leap of faith."

Barlog noted the way developers will be more free with what they do, and won't need to go to great lengths to hide loading screens within the game.

He added: "The SSD is just amazing... There's some really cool stuff I think we're gonna be able to do."

However, the director admitted while the teams won't be going "back to square one" to come to grips with the new system, he still finds the transition period a strange experience.

He said: "I'm always a little sad in the... change of a generation, because I feel like all the cool tricks that we learn, now we have to learn all these new tricks.

"Which is great, that's fun, but, you know, you feel a little bit less in control of things."
