That is according to new figures released by the technology giant Sony, which has underlined the success of the console since its much-discussed release in November 2013 by confirming the extent of its popularity among consumers.

In a statement, Andrew House, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO, said: "We're truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since launch three years ago.

"With tremendous support from our fans and partners across the globe, this year we were able to deliver an unprecedented lineup of hardware such as the new slimmer PS4, PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR."

Andrew - who saw the PS4 console pass the 40 million mark in May this year - has promised fans of the console that they will be able to enjoy it even more in the coming months.

He said: "We will continue to provide the best gaming experiences available through our ground-breaking software lineup and network services, as we focus on accelerating our business and expanding the PS4 ecosystem."

Meanwhile, Sony has also confirmed that software sales reached 369.6 million as of December 4.

By contrast, Microsoft has not revealed the sales data for the Xbox One, after it became clear that the PS4 was proving to be more popular among consumers.
