Mr Constantinos Kyriakides, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at The Private Clinic on Harley Street discusses these below.

Post Natal Depression

Post natal depression is very rarely associated with men, however if is a male affliction too. There are a number of reasons as to why it may happen and there are a string of possible explanations. The financial pressures new father’s face, the dramatic lifestyle change and lack of sleep can all play a role. In other instances, if a man’s wife is suffering from PND, it has been known for the husband to then experience it as well.

Breast Cancer

This is clearly an illness which is overwhelmingly associated with women. However, some 300 men in the UK are diagnosed with the illness each year. This illness in men is still largely misunderstood which can lead to low detection rates.

Varicose Veins

There are many misconceptions about the causes of varicose veins but the main reason is down to genetics. Due to this men are also very commonly affected by varicose veins.

Where varicose veins can have health implications such as swelling, throbbing, and heavy legs, etc – they are also an aesthetic concern for many people.

Osteoporosis

Whilst more women suffer from this disease, it still affects one in five men. It can often be caused by genetics and low levels of the male hormone testosterone.

Incontinence

Adverts for products such as tena lady may be one of the reasons that incontinence is often linked to women. Men don’t realise that they have a similar set of muscles at the bottom of the pelvis as women that supports everything above it. These muscles get weaker as we get older, strain too much or in some instances they can be damaged after bowel or prostate surgery.

Migraines

Migrains can be triggered by a woman’s hormone cycle, which perhaps explains why they are more associated with women. However, other factors can contribute to the onset of migraines such as stress, skipping meals and dehydration which is why men are prone to suffer from them as well.
