It’s a scene most of us are familiar with – and one that demonstrates just how much light levels can dramatically change the look, and feel, of a room.
In a new survey of over 1,500 UK residents, ‘comfortable’ and ‘light’ were the two top words people used to describe the perfect house. In fact, over half of those surveyed chose ‘light’ as the word they most associate with their dream home.
The survey, conducted by the web’s leading DIY shutter retailer, the California Shutter Company, also found that many people have trouble with the levels of light in their property. While over three quarters of people said they would be put off buying or renting a property because it was “too dark” inside, 25% of those surveyed chose light levels as one of the things they’d most like to change about their home.
The California Shutter Company’s Sam Tamlyn says: “Spring has certainly sprung, and the sunshine streaming through the window can make us fall in love with a room all over again.
“Controlling light levels in a room during the Spring and Summer months, however, can be difficult. Many of our customers come to us looking for a way of making the most of natural light in their homes, whilst still maintaining control of light and privacy levels.
“Shutters are the most versatile of all window dressings – and the perfect solution for those looking to make the most of natural lighting.”
There are a number of different shutter styles to choose from, depending on the effect you hope to produce. Sam explains:
“The most popular style, the plantation shutter, has louvers/slats that rotate open and closed – giving you complete control over light levels in the room.
“Perfect for larger windows, tier-on-tier shutters give two separate sets of shutters, one above the other. You can open each set individually, which gives you even greater flexibility and light control.
“Solid shutters are ideal for those wanting to create a more traditional look. These are designed to be folded back during the day and closed at night, and work well in country cottages. For French doors, you also opt for movable slats on top – again this allows for a great level of light control.”
