If you love Christmas but think storing things you only use once a year seems pointless- we have you covered. Perhaps you don’t have a lot of storage space but still want to decorate your home or maybe the ritual of bringing everything out and putting everything away always causes arguments and unnecessary stress. If so, here are some natural decoration ideas that you can buy fresh every year.

A real Christmas tree: They can cost a little more over the years, however the bonus is, you can cut it up once Christmas is over and pop it in your green waste bin so it will be properly recycled after the event. Let’s face it, they smell great, they look great and you don’t have to squeeze it into a bag or box once Christmas is over leaving your storage space to breathe a sigh of relief.

A real wreath: You can pick these up from supermarkets and garden centres and they make a warm and festive greeting for your door. But the best part about them is- once the festivities are over, they can go right in the green bin with your tree and be taken away and recycled into something else.

Poinsettias: Or another suitably festive plant will make a striking centrepiece on your table. Red plants also look good on a sideboard or on the hearth of your fireplace. Then once they are past their best, you can put them in the green bin and not feel any guilt about their disposal, unlike when you have to part with decorations made from artificial materials. The guilt in this case is very real.

Cones: Cones in a bowl are one of the easiest decorations to put together even if you aren’t gifted in festive home decor. If you put a few drops of appropriately scented oil on them, or place a few sticks of cinnamon in between they will not only look the part but smell great too. You can even buy them pre-scented if you don’t trust your own nose! You could even sprinkle a few cranberries among the cones to give them a dash of colour.

Holly: Nothing says Christmas like a sprig of holly- so if you are out and about and see some or indeed have some in your garden, cut a few pieces off and use this to decorate your space. Just remember to keep out of reach of littles ones as they are beautiful but prickly!

A real Christmas garland: Again you can easily pick one of these up in a supermarket or garden centre and you won’t need to wrestle it back into the box at New Year- simply pop it in the green bin along with your other natural decorations.

Orange slice decorations: Dried orange slices are a natural and disposable addition to any Christmas tree. There are plenty of tutorials online that will give you the specifics on how to achieve this aesthetic and you will be glad to know they don’t take very long at all. Once they have hung from your tree for a while- all you need to do is pop them in your compost bin. The greatest benefit of these is you don’t need to invest in a large bauble box- just a modest one will do and you can supplement your collection with natural, colourful options. Oranges stuffed with cloves will fill your home with the smell of Christmas too if you want to avoid artifical scents this year.

So there we have it- you don’t need to monopolise your storage space with Christmas things. Your home can look stunning at Christmas without having to burden yourself with lots of boxes of decor. Add in a few key, meaningful pieces that have been passed down to you or that you have bought yourself over the years and you will have the perfect balance of nature and sentiment.

Happy Christmas everyone!
