Chances are you will receive at least one thing this year that won’t bring any value to your life. Whether it comes from your Secret Santa at work who you don’t know well or a distant relative here are some options if you find yourself in this situation.

Trade it in: If you get any electricals, DVDs, games or Blu-rays that you know will fail to entertain you- you could take them to your local shop and get money or credit for them to put towards something you genuinely want.

Donate it: Find a charity shop that raises funds for a cause close to your heart and take along anything that you know won’t serve you in the New Year and beyond. You will be making space and helping to raise money for those in need- it’s a win-win situation.

Give it to someone else: If you know a friend or family member would get excited by your unwanted gift, give it to them and chances are you will get to see them enjoying it on a regular basis.

Swap with someone else: If you have something that you know a friend or family member would like and they have something you fancy- suggest an exchange. Just make sure they don’t want the thing you are eyeing up and they are passing on something they want to give away.

Get a refund: If the gifter has kindly left the receipt in for if the present doesn’t fit or it’s not to your taste, take it back and spend the money on something else. If they have given you the gift and the receipt, they probably won’t be offended if you need to go back to the store. It’s like they are giving you their blessing.

Exchange: Similarly, if an item of clothing doesn’t sit quite right on you- take it back for a bigger or smaller one so you feel more comfortable in it and will get more wear out of it.

Sell it: There are plenty of sites you can sell your unwanted things on if you think the item has value. eBay and Facebook Marketplace are a good starting point and there are always local groups on Facebook for your immediate community- just make sure that the person who gifted you the item isn’t also on there!

Hold a car boot sale: It may not be the weather for one right now, however, you can put your unwanted Christmas gifts aside. Let them build up until you have enough to take with you in the spring or summer months to make some extra cash.

Raffles: Speak to people around you- they may need things for part of an upcoming raffle they are organising to raise money for a good cause. In which case, a bottle of booze, a teddy bear or a box of chocolates will be very welcome.

Regift: If you know someone who would appreciate the item, keep it tucked away for their birthday or next Christmas and you will save yourself some money when celebrations arise.
