It’s the second week of September, if you are on this journey with us, welcome back! If you are new to this series of articles, lovely to have you along for the ride. So let’s get into it, here are just seven things you can focus on reducing this week…

Haircare: Anything that is used to wash, condition, comb, style or dry your hair is in the spotlight this week. Is there anything you have not used in a long time? For instance if you no longer like your hair straight, why keep your straighteners? If you tried a shampoo once and it made your head itch, can you pass this onto someone else who loves the brand? Perhaps you have some hair ties that kept snapping when you used them- if so get rid!

Biscuits: If you have some old and soggy biscuits at the bottom of the barrel that no one ever reaches for, it may be time to bin these and give your tin a good wash out. Perhaps you bought a packet of biscuits that you tried one of and decided you didn’t like- can you give to a friend or family member? Or break them up for the bird table? Maybe you got a tin of biscuits at Christmas and still haven’t broken into them- could you invite some friends over to crack it open and have a good chat and snack?

Sauces: While you are in the kitchen, check out your sauces too, the ones in the cupboard and the fridge. Some are designed to be used within a few days or weeks of opening, so make sure you adhere to the guidelines on the bottle. If you opened a jar of cranberry sauce and you only used it at Christmas, it’s very likely past its best!

Dancing equipment: If you tried a form of dance that you didn't take to, now might be the perfect time to donate, gift or sell the items that are associated with it. There is no shame in trying a hobby, only to discover that it’s not for you- but getting rid of the items that you wore to go to the class will put you in the mindset to move onto something you do love.

University stuff: If you are a recent graduate or left university years ago, now is the time to reevaluate the things that you brought home with you from your days as a student. Old papers, single bedding, mementos from your nights out, books for study- whatever you have that no longer applies to your life now- it’s time to close the chapter and move on.

At home beauty products: Perhaps you tried an at home solution to save you some money but realised that you prefer to visit a salon for your treatments. Maybe you tried to create a spa experience from the comfort of your own home and there were too many distractions to relax. If this sounds like you, time to ditch the waxing strips, the shellac nail kit and foot spas. It was a nice idea, but the reality is that they simply didn’t work for you.

Old car documents: Old insurance, repair and service papers and MOT certificates for cars you don’t even own anymore. If you have kept everything from every car you’ve ever driven, it might be time to streamline this down to just the ones that apply to the car you have NOW.

Happy decluttering!
